What is the Ego?
Dr Shefali Tsabary
The ego, is really the false self. The self that has forgotten that it is one with everyone around it and one with the Divine Source, with the universe, with cosmos, with every energy possible. And especially one with our children.
If the Ego is the false self – then who is the true self?
So many of us hold on to controlling and dictating how each outcome in life should be so tightly, that we miss out on the whole purpose of life, just being and living each day like it’s our first and last day here on earth.
There is this voice (the Ego) sitting in our subconscious controlling all our beliefs, ideas and thoughts about ourselves, others and how we experience the world. When the Ego controls our thought processes we are bound to limited beliefs and conditions, this makes us feel like negative things are happening to us, because we are not deserving of goodness.
How have we let this happen?
It’s happened because
We have forgotten that we are one with everything that is and we look for self validation by seeking approval from others so that we can feel worthy.
Is this wrong?
It is completely wrong. As worthiness doesn’t come from outside validation it comes from internal self love and compassion.
We need to remember that we are the ones in charge of creating our own reality and there is no point in worrying about what others are thinking of us, as this allows our Ego to take over and create a story about what is best for us.
When we become responsible for our thoughts, actions and human experience, we get control back of our lives, we get to decide who we want to become and we are able to break free from the restrictions that the Ego has put in place and become our own Hero.
We need to remember that the Ego is a fear making machine but is also the key to waking up; if we can start being more mindful and aware of when we feel fear, then we become more present to when the Ego has reared up it’s ugly head.
The more we connect with the Ego, the more we realise that it is present in our lives, because it is just trying to keep us safe. This false self is the job it has created for itself and because it is fear driven it has become so loud and has been in control for so long, that we have forgotten about our true self, and that we are connected with all that is.
In Mindfulness we use meditation as a way to go within and connect with our true self. We start realising that whatever we are perceiving is a projection of our inner landscape that has been created by the Ego.
Therefore to change your external world you need to alter your inner world. Becoming the witness of your thoughts and practicing non attachment reduces the control of the Ego as you no longer follow its lead but find an anchor point such as the breath to stay focused upon.
If we can learn ‘The Art of Letting Go of the False Self”, it empowers us and allows us to be open to new possibilities and opportunities that can expand and transform us into becoming our Hero which leads to a feeling of resilience, a sense of contentment and calm as we gain inner peace by accepting who we are and no longer have to prove ourselves to anyone, (especially the Ego!)
