A point in your life when you have to make an important decision.
Life is full of decision; Should I wear the red top or the blue? What should I have for breakfast? What school should I send my child to? Some decisions will be easy to make whilst others might require some research and contemplation.
Sometimes it can be difficult, when making big decisions in your life, as it can feel like you have come to a crossroad. Your decisions determine which roads and what direction your life will take. When you come to a crossroad and are unsure which path to go down, all you need to do is check in with your values and purpose.
The emotional currency of life. Your core principals that give meaning to your life and are highly important to you.
Once you know what you value and you have set a purpose in place then you need to find the reason behind why your values and purpose are so important to you; as knowing these answers will give you focus, motivation and clarity when you hit a crossroad.
- What are the most important things in my life – what do I value?
- How do I want to live my life?
- What am I trying to achieve?
- Who am I trying to help?
- What makes me, me?
- Why do I need to do this?
Sometimes on this journey of life you will feel lost but with Mindfulness it allows you to become aware of when you are going off course and it empowers you to notice if you are holding true to your values and purpose.
If you find that you aren’t in congruence then Mindfulness can give you the space to be able to become aware of that and this allows you to make a proactive choice to align yourself once again with your values and purpose and continue to move forward.
Each crossroad gives you the opportunity to make a conscious choice that can define if you are moving one step closer to achieving your goal. Therefore see crossroads as a good opportunity to pause and cross check that you are still living by your core values and purpose.
Treat these moments in time as a chance to pause, reflect and check you are still on your desired path and aligned to your authentic self. A tool you can use during this reflection is the Light and Heavy tool, as this can help you determine when something is right (true) for you and when it is not. Dr Dain Heer states:
Dr Dain Heer
Something that is true for you will always make you feel lighter, Something that’s a lie for you will always make you feel heavier.
So how does this work. When you hear, see or interact with someone if you feel a lightness within yourself then you know this piece of information is true for you. If on the other hand you feel a heaviness, a dense energy within yourself, then you can determine that you are not in alignment with that piece of information.
Understanding these signals from the body can be confusing and does take practice. A great way to practice is using Mindfulness as being more present with the body and how it is feeling allows you to connect with your body and understand the messages it is sending you.
A body scan meditation allows you to connect with each part of the body and sit with whatever is present. During this practise we aren’t trying to change anything or ignore anything, we are just sitting, acknowledging and being present with the body and listening to the messages it is sending.
So next time you are at crossroads, I recommend you pause, breath, think about the decision and then connect with the body and see what it has to say.
